I made a team for Race for the Cure again - I chose the team name Nepeta Runaria... just to be interesting. Nepeta
Cataria is the latin name for catnip, so i figure this includes both a
kitty reference (my running group is the Soggy City Kitties), and, well, runners nip? There is more info about the race in the email quoted below.

As usual, i encourage everyone to sign up to run, walk, or at least donate to one of your friends. I've already got a couple of wonderful folks on my team. If you're thinking about signing up, why not do so today? Make the commitment, and encourage me to get my butt together to think about planning a waffle breakfast afterwards.

One of the reasons i do this is to encourage my community to get active (phsyically and in their community), and also to do some interesting activity together. Surely you want to participate in that?!

Not sure you can run a 5K? You can! Try following a schedule like the following:

As a top rated non-profit, 75 percent of the Puget Sound
Affiliate's net income remains in the local community to fund
educational outreach, screening and treatment programs for underserved
women in Western Washington and the remaining net income supports the
global search for a cure.

On Sunday, June 7, 2009, I will participate in the Susan G. Komen Puget
Sound Race for the Cure® in Seattle. I would be honored and
inspired to have you on my team.

By running or walking in the Race, we can model the healthy choices
important in combating cancer. Most importantly your smile and
support provides the personal momentum needed to achieve the Susan G.
Komen vision of a world without breast cancer. Every step in this race
counts.

Well, after multiple questions about this year's event, i made a team.

I chose the team name Nepeta Runaria... just to be interesting. Nepeta
Cataria is the latin name for catnip, so i figure this includes both a
kitty reference (my running group is the Soggy City Kitties), and, well, runners nip? Please refer to the email
included below, which should contain usable hyperlinks to registration
pages.

As usual, i encourage everyone to sign up to run, slack-off (there is a
sleep in option), or at least donate to one of your fellow runners.

Dear Friend,

Did you know that one in eight women will be stricken with breast
cancer in her lifetime?

Many of you know that i regularly participate in fund raising for breast cancer charities, mostly in doing the Race for the Cure every year. You may remember that a couple of years ago i also did the 3 day walk, which similarly raises money to do breast cancer research and help fund detection and treatment programs. My partner for that event, Amy, is doing it again this year.

Please consider donating to her fund-raising efforts:
http://www.the3day.org/site/TR/Walk/WashingtonDCEvent?px=1288079&pg=personal&fr_id=1192

Even a very small amount will help her reach her goal.

If you prefer a more active form of charity, consider joining the national bone marrow registry. There is a program right now where you can get donor kits for free, up till sept. 22. Go here to sign up to receive your kit:
http://www.marrow.org/HELP/Events/NASCAR/index.html

Giving someone a bone marrow donation can be a life saving gift!

I made my team. This year it is on June 21. The stock email is hidden below, until i get more time to write up encouraging remarks about the race. Please feel free to join my team or donate to the cause.

Okay, some information about the race:

This is a 5K road race, which runs along the Alaskan Way Viaduct in downtown Seattle. A portion of your registration, plus any extra donations you can scare up, goes to breast cancer charities. This charity is run by Puget Sound Komen, which has an excellent rating in terms of their responsible use of the funds they raise.

The race itself is on June 16 this year. You can sign up for a women's only timed run, a co-ed timed run, a co-ed walk, or even a 'sleep in for the cure'. It is a nice route to run - lots of fun to look out over Puget Sound or downtown. If you are training for other things this summer, its a great way to break into the season. If you aren't, you can either use this event as inspiration to get some walking and running in this spring, or just plan to walk it with no advance preparation.

As an aside - last year i'd wanted to do a brunch or something, but it sort of fell through. If we get a good crowd this year i may try that again, or team shirts or something... No promises yet, but, if that sort of thing drives you, let me know.

Hope to see you there!
