I think it highlights some of the issues, but without the histrionics of a lot of what i'm seeing on FB. I thought it was nice that it pays heed to the people who are needing to do the searches - it really bothers me that people who are angry with the procedure feel like it becomes their right to transgress against other folks in return. And, finally, i thought the advice seemed sound.

I have been thinking about reasonable responses. I think the large problem is that air travel has a monopoly on our travel. I think exercising options and pursuing options for travel is the only real way to address the myriad of problems we see when flying. High-speed rail, driving, and even reducing travel must be considered and pursued to what degree they can be.

I've been trying to dream up a sort of protest-flight-suit - something that is basically a single layer of covering that can be worn through the airports. I'd like to make it see-through for effect, but, i don't want to offend all those sensitive souls out there. So, maybe protest writing? I dunno, something that makes a statement without being outright offensive.

I haven't had a chance to look at this too in depth yet, but, it looks like it could be very interesting:

I didn't post this this morning, with the accompanying comment that it makes me sick to my stomach to consider that Sarah Palin could hold national office in just a few short months, because i had nothing more to say than that:
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2008290780_vpenvirosidebar21m.html

However, now you can go clicky-clicky on a poll to vent some tiny amount of your ire that you have to worry about these things:

so post away i will.
my stomach does not feel any better in considering these things.

go here to find out:

As an added cool thing, you can look to see which of the recent elections you've voted in.

(If you are a resident of Washington, and AREN'T registered to vote, go here:

to figure out how to fix things.)

buses

My cold has been giving me breathing issues, so i took the bus yesterday and today.
stuff about taking the bus )

I wanted to mention, though, that capitalism is working on our oil issues. This summer gas prices finally got high enough that people started responding. Bike stores are sold out of bikes (used bikes are particularly hard to come by), and the buses are packed. People are really starting to figure out alternatives to driving their single occupancy cars. The most wondrous thing is that economics are also working on the supply, and oil prices have started to drop.

I've been saying for a while that what we need is to increase gas prices, not decrease them. People need to start thinking about alternatives, and clearly they need the financial incentive to do that. I'm rather thrilled with these developments.

(And, yes, i know, its a regressive demand issue. There are people out there who really are being hurt by the higher oil prices, and who don't have the option to modify their cars or commuting options. People are being hit by higher costs for food and other consumables related to gas prices, and some of those people can ill afford those increases. I get that. Still, i'd rather see those people be helped out by a capitalist driven decrease in oil prices, or other means entirely, than an artificial influx or more oil.)

Especially given all of that, I am vehemently against increasing our oil supply by opening up new oil reserves. I think that would be a temporary solution to a huge problem. I think it would harm our environment directly, while only delaying the need for different solutions to our energy issues. I think forcing people to become creative to find those solutions by allowing the oil prices to stay high has very little downside (exception noted in parenthesis above). The higher gas prices mean that people are walking or biking, which is a healthy habit for most people to adopt. It means they are using transportation options that are less harmful to the environment, and that they are more likely to support or adopt newly developed technologies. This is all good.

Honestly, even if oil prices come down, i'd like to see auto-fuel prices remain elevated. Although i know that is a pipe dream only likely to be supported by a city-dwelling bike enthusiast like myself!

In short, though, this issue of oil is important to me. It is a big reason that i favor Obama over McCain.

I think we have to be really careful about judging how and how much Palin returns to work. As with all parenting decisions, the balance for one person is not necessarily the balance for the other person. We also don't know the details - what does 'return to work' mean? How did it work in her family so that her choice made sense?

Josh worked from the hospital while i was in labor, and i checked work email within a day of Madeleine's birth. Not only that, but i'm at work now, and she's barely a year old. I will fight for my right, and defend my decisions if necessary, on each of those issues. I don't think its up to me to question the personal decision of someone else who i only know professionally.

FWIW, i also don't think we should care about people's marital infidelities, or choice of leisure activities. But, I think that candidates open themselves up to criticism on these fronts when they try to use themselves as examples in those dimensions, or when they are trying to dictate their constituent's choices on those dimensions. I also see that this is fuzzy, because poor decisions on a personal front may indicate the propensity to make poor decisions in a professional front.

However, you will not catch me suggesting that Palin shouldn't be a serious VP candidate because of her familial situation. You will even see me getting excited about the fact that her gender and personal situation haven't automatically out-ruled her from consideration for the post. And all this no matter how much i hope that the current republican campaign goes down in flames!

I must admit that i've been largely ignoring politics, so this came as a surprise to me:
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2008146283_apcvnmccainveepstakes.html

However, i'm excited about it.  I suppose i could be worried because i think it might legitimately improve McCain's chances of getting elected, and i wish for Obama to win.  However, i'm thrilled that we have a woman on one of the tickets.  Now i'm going to go have to read about this person and see what i think of her...

I thought Biden was a good choice, and i understood the reasons for choosing him.  But, Palin is a bit more exciting (at least at the outset) to me.  Also, may i say, excellent game strategy.

Feel free to discuss.  I'm pretty ignorant these days, so i could probably use some argument.

but...
I am hoping to go to my caucus tomorrow. I am going to weigh in on the democratic decision.

(Honestly, i'm so pissed off at the democratic party's handling of the nomination that i considered voting in the Republican primary. However, not only do i think that decision is effectively made, but, i also think its unlikely i'll be able to not vote for a democrat in the November election. Plus, honestly, i think it might be fun to go to a caucus.)

Anyway, i think i have my choice, and my reasons. Which are too long to write up right now. But i wonder if any one else wants to share their thoughts on this decision?

One thing i'm wondering about is exactly how much attention i should pay to the ability to inspire people. I think that Obama may have an edge here, and that Clinton can excite people but perhaps not get them on board with her the way Obama can. I'm not sure how important i think this is in who the party chooses as their candidate.
