I bought my parents a SPOT for Christmas. Dad has been using it -- the big benefit of it is that it has an "I'm OK" setting as well as just a "come help me" setting. It lets him send a message to my Mom that shows her where he is, and that he's OK, if he's out longer than he had planned. Since he still hikes by himself (goddamnit) and is frequently off-schedule, this has been a godsend for both of them in terms of sanity. Mom doesn't panic and Dad doesn't get yelled at when he gets home late.
Wow, that's amazing! Steve Howe's story was incredible. I love that there's a mode where you can send "I'm okay" messages. That right there would be worth the price of buying it for one of my kids, or anyone I love who hikes a lot.
Have you see the video on Vimeo of the guy who got caught in an avalanche (http://vimeo.com/6581009) and captured it all on his helmet cam? It's a little gut-wrenching to watch, but it sure drives home the importance of being aware of avalanche dangers and taking people with you when you go out. He was under the snow for just a few minutes, and they found him because his glove fell off and landed on top of the snow.
