I believe you and I have the same waist issue that a) makes a high-rise cut awkward and b) makes us look oddly mis-shapen with skinny-jeans. ;) You might end up liking Gap fits if you tried, but i'm really in it for the 36" in-seam.
I like the pants that i have that have some elastic in the fabric, because they stretch around my thighs without being weirdly loose at the top (less of a problem now than it used to be...). They do seem to wear out more quickly, though.
