meganursula: (contemplative)
I think we have to be really careful about judging how and how much Palin returns to work. As with all parenting decisions, the balance for one person is not necessarily the balance for the other person. We also don't know the details - what does 'return to work' mean? How did it work in her family so that her choice made sense?

Josh worked from the hospital while i was in labor, and i checked work email within a day of Madeleine's birth. Not only that, but i'm at work now, and she's barely a year old. I will fight for my right, and defend my decisions if necessary, on each of those issues. I don't think its up to me to question the personal decision of someone else who i only know professionally.

FWIW, i also don't think we should care about people's marital infidelities, or choice of leisure activities. But, I think that candidates open themselves up to criticism on these fronts when they try to use themselves as examples in those dimensions, or when they are trying to dictate their constituent's choices on those dimensions. I also see that this is fuzzy, because poor decisions on a personal front may indicate the propensity to make poor decisions in a professional front.

However, you will not catch me suggesting that Palin shouldn't be a serious VP candidate because of her familial situation. You will even see me getting excited about the fact that her gender and personal situation haven't automatically out-ruled her from consideration for the post. And all this no matter how much i hope that the current republican campaign goes down in flames!
